Necropsy Laboratory Completed For The University of Sydney

Necropsy: A post-mortem examination or autopsy.

DID YOU KNOW: Necropsies have been done for more than 2,000 years.

The Roman physician Antistius performed one of the earliest necropsies on record. In 44 B.C., he examined Julius Caesar and documented 23 wounds, including a final fatal stab to the chest.

Graphite Projects recently completed the refurbishment and fitout of the Necropsy Laboratory for The University of Sydney’s School of Veterinary Science. The project, delivered under a Design & Construct model, involved the refurbishment of a wet laboratory utilised for veterinary autopsy procedures.

The project is part of the University’s Strategic Plan, which involves significant investment to dramatically increase the quality and impact of the University’s research programs, and fell under the FDC Managing Contractor umbrella of works.

This technically detailed project required the finalisation of initial services design by NDY to fulfil the requirements for a functioning PC2 compliant laboratory facility, and at the same time meet the University’s strict design guidelines.

The works included the supply and installation of a new in-ground 1,000L dilution pit essential for the treatment of laboratory waste. Specific to the requirements of the space, a new Air Handling Unit was installed to condition & change 100% of the volume of air, 10 times per hour. Other features included custom built stainless-steel benches, sinks and troughs and extensive water segregation and distribution throughout the space.

Graphite Projects procured and integrated a large number of specialist laboratory equipment items including a plumbed, powered and ventilated height adjustable workstation, integrated with audiovisual capability, autoclave, bio safety cabinet, pass through hatch, laboratory grade freezer, dishwasher and a cool room.

Adding to the challenge was the fact that the original space had not been refurbished since the 1960’s and the inherent issues this bought with it. In addition, extensive excavation and structural reinstatement was required to facilitate the effective drainage of laboratory and sanitary waste.

The project adds to Graphite’s extensive experience in Medical and Science projects, which includes, Laboratories, Clean rooms, Burns Units, and Operating theatres.
